Biscayne Bay by Paddleboard at Dawn

Biscayne Bay by Paddleboard at Dawn

Launch from Virginia Key at seven AM. The water is shallow and calm on the bay side — waist-deep for a quarter mile, clear enough to see seagrass waving below. Manatees graze here in winter, surfacing with a sigh from an animal the size of a couch. Stingrays glide beneath the board like underwater kites.

Paddle north toward the Julia Tuttle Causeway and the Brickell skyline fills your vision — every glass tower catching different light, construction cranes silhouetted. The bay smells of salt and seagrass. The silence at seven, before the jet skis wake up, is Miami's most underpriced luxury.

November through April for calm water and manatees. Summer thunderstorms arrive without warning — get off the water when clouds go dark. Rentals on Virginia Key and Key Biscayne. Sunscreen, water, polarized sunglasses to see through the glare to the world below.
